9/24/2008 – Portland – Sexual Abuse Prevention Training
Sexual Abuse Prevention Training - Portland 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Overview:
Oregon Mentors and Mentor Portland co-host Cory Jewel Jensen, M.S. for an important training that every staff member in a youth development agency should attend. Cory Jewel Jensen is co-director of the Center for Behavioral Intervention in Beaverton. Ms. Jensen has a career treating sex offenders. Come learn the facts about this important problem. Ms. Jensen will give you new information on grooming techniques, often-held misconceptions, and the statistics about sexual offenders.
Description:
The FBI estimates there is a sex offender living in every square mile of the United States. Most child molesters are able to molest dozens of children before they get caught and have less than a 3% change of being apprehended. Boys and girls are at equal risk to be abused and about 30% of all children are molested sometime before their 18th birthday. Fewer than 5% will tell anyone. The overwhelming majority of child victims are abused by someone they know and trust. At this workshop, with forensic sex offender expert, Cory Jewell Jensen, M.S., you will learn:
- The specific strategies offenders use to select, engage and seduce children
- The tactics offenders use to avoid detection by parents and community members
- The need for parent/guardian training and "informed supervision"
- Information to include in family discussions about personal safety
Participants should be aware that the presentation includes videotaped interviews with convicted sex offenders and graphic discussions about sexual crimes against children. Participants who have a personal history of sexual abuse should have support people available to them following the presentation. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT ATTEND and there will be no child care provided.
